Bitch Media’s redesign launches

I’ve been working with BitchMedia and their Drupal development team, Quilted, over the last several months on the redesign of their website, which launched last week. I had a great time working with the folks at Bitch Media, in particular Kjerstin Johnson (web content manager), Brian Frank (operations director), and Briar Levitt, art director (also at www.briarmade.wordpress.com), whose excellent design made my part a delight to work on.

I did image production for the donate block on the sidebar as well as modifications in the CSS to change headline and link colors, search box positioning, replaced the logo with the new version and made other minor changes. I’m proud of the final result, and prouder still to have the opportunity to work with such an excellent organization. Check it out yourself at Bitch Media.

eCommerce Website

I built this eCommerce website for a green building supply center on Wordpress to make it easy to update with store announcements and new products. The site uses a ShopSite shopping cart system and processes payments through PayPal–a cost-effective option for small businesses just getting started.

The site also includes email capture for their eNewsletter prominently throughout the site and the ability to sell sidebar advertising. Announcements made on the store’s Facebook fan page appear on the site’s home page as well as scrolling images of their products and projects.

Wordpress Site: Q Center

Q Center, a nonprofit LGBTQ community center in Portland, Oregon, needed to trade in their outdated Wordpress blog for a more robust website. The solution I provided is a website that uses Wordpress as its content management system (CMS) to minimize the cost of a redesign and keep staff training to a minimum. Graphic design was done in-house by Q Center staff. The result is a website that uses many of the previous site’s pages and posts, but has an completely new look and feel. Easy navigation makes the new website a great improvement for Q Center users.

Custom Website: Jessica Burke, visual artist

Jessica Burke’s custom website is hand-coded HTML and CSS with three javascript image galleries (Dreamweaver was used for scripting the galleries) that I customized to highlight Jessica’s work.

Informational Site

I developed this simple informational website for a college professor’s summer study abroad course. The website was created on a budget with Google sites, but has a custom domain name that makes marketing the website to students easier.

Blog customization

I customized this visual artist’s blog to include links to social networking sites and an email sign-up form to receive blog posts by email. I used Feedburner to manage the blog’s email subscriptions and track viewer statistics.

eNewsletter via RSS Feed

When the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act passed in 2009, Community Services Consortium needed to a way to let local nonprofits and the community know about the programs and services they were implementing with Federal Stimulus funds. They had no budget, minimal staff time, and little technical knowledge, but they did have a staff member who regularly wrote news articles and press releases for the agency.
The solution: I created a free blog on Blogger, customized it, and then trained the staff to cut and paste their articles and news stories into the blog template. The real time-saver is the creation of the eNewsletter–it’s completely automated! The eNewsletter template was created in MailChimp, a free email service provider, and uses the blog’s RSS feed to automatically generate an electronic newsletter each week and month. Staff members are not spending hours each month laboring over a newsletter template, managing email subscribers, or assembling content–all the work is done once, when an article is written up and then published to the blog, and that’s it! Email subscribers receive a formatted eNewsletter in their inbox with all the stories and articles published on the blog that week.

Print Materials: Community Services Consortium

I developed print materials for Community Services Consortium (CSC), an Oregon community action agency, while working on strategic communications for the agency. These materials are given out as supplements during presentations to help explain the complicated breadth of the agency’s scope.

The Communications Flow Chart was created to help staff members visual the ideal flow of information throughout the agency in an effort to improve external communications by simplifying internal processes.
