User Research Services

I’m like a UX team of one that you can hire to take on overload work or projects that require expertise that your in-house team doesn’t have yet.

I ensure that you get actionable insights from the user research I conduct, prioritized according to what will have the most impact on your particular goals.

Plus, I’m a seasoned UX designer and researcher.  I’ve worked in-house, as a consultant, and as a solopreneur for more than 15 years. I know how to get the job done with minimal fuss.  Here’s how I manage UX research projects:

  • Initial kickoff call with you and any stakeholders I’ll be working with during the project.
  • Weekly check-ins via email to share my progress and ensure the project stays on track.
  • Mid-point review (optional) – a brief call where I share my progress and findings so far and we can make adjustments to the research plan if needed.
  • Final presentation where I’ll present my work to you and your team, answer questions, and hand off deliverables.

What will I get from you?

I always start by auditing your current website based on the goals you shared with me.  Then, I’ll draft a research plan to help us identify your users’ pain points and the opportunities we have to accomplish your goals.  Finally, I’ll execute the research plan, which may include recruiting and scheduling participants for interviews, interviewing users, analyzing and synthesizing the interview data.

The deliverables for a UX research project are:

  • a UX audit report that lists usability issues on your website and my recommendations on how to fix them
  • recordings and transcripts of user interviews
  • a summary of user research insights
  • my recommendations for next steps

What you will NOT get from my UX research projects:

  • Design prototypes or design files that are ready to hand off to a website developer

Can I see an example of your UX research work?

Yes!  Here are examples of the types of files and artifacts I may create for a UX research project.

Delivering actionable research insights and recommendations

On a project for the City of Chattanooga, I analyzed language access services provided by similarly-sized city governments in the U.S.

Then, I summarized what I learned and provided my recommendations for the top 3 actions they could take to improve their own program, while keeping their budget constraints in mind.

Distilling raw data into opportunities for action

On a project for a major US city, I analyzed peer city interviews to uncover lessons learned to help inform the city’s approach to improving their own digital platform for income-restricted housing.

What do you need from me to get started?

I’ll ask you a few questions to help me understand your goals and users, and that’s all I need to get started. As the project progresses, I’ll likely also need your help to identify research participants to interview.

I’ll ask you a few questions to help me understand your goals and users as well as your overall website traffic so I can conduct the audit using the devices and browsers that your site visitors use.
